The holy city of Haridwari is the gateway to the the Char Dham- Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Haridwar literally means “the gateway of the Gods”. According to the Hindu mythology, It is considered that when the Gods left their footprints on the holy land of Haridwar, symbolically they also marked an permanent mark on the religious philosophy of every Hindu in this world. These four sacred places Ujjain, Haridwar, Nasik, and Allahabad have today become places where the Kumbha Mela is celebrated in every twelve years. The faith that the mind and the spirit can be purified from every sin by visiting Haridwar attracts people in vast figure to involve themselves in the Kumbh Mela which takes place once every 12 years and the Ardh Kumbh Mela, which comes once every six years. Haridwar is one of the oldest cities of India and therefore finds its name inscribed among the ancient Hindu scriptures. Haridwar is also one of the first places where Ganga originates from the mountains to embrace the plains beneath. The water here is perfectly clear and cool. The North Indian city of Allahabad is a confluence of history, culture and religion. The city is not only a prime place of pilgrimage interest but has offered a major contribution in the formation of modern India. The ancient name of the city is Aggra which means place of sacrifice in Sanskrit. According to the Hindu mythology Lord Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating this World. Due to the sacredness of Allahabad city, Lord Brahma also referred this place as ‘Tirth Raj’ which means Best of all pilgrimage centres.’ The Vedas and the great epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, described this holy city as Prayag. The city has also witnessed many major events of our freedom movement. Many important events in India’s struggle for freedom, took place here, like the formation of the first Indian National Congress in 1885, the commencement of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence movement in 1920 and many others. Lakshadweep means “a hundred thousand islands” but there are Thirty six isles in total, ten of which are inhabited by humans. The ten inhabited islands are namely Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni,Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy The Islands of Lakshadweep gives the impression of being like emeralds in the infinite stretch of blue sea. Varying shade of blue translucent water surrounds them. The Coral reef, the beyond compare oceanic milieu with innumerable colours results in a multifaceted interface of animate and inanimate things. The island of Lakshadweep is built on the ancient volcanic structures. It consists of twelve coral isle, three reefs and five underwater banks. The coral island perched on the submerged banks houses thirty six islands having an area of 32 sq. Km. Each of the island is bordered by white coral sands and are marked by a huge thin tranquil lagoon on one side which protects the islands from incoming gush of the outer sea water by the fortification of reef bariers made of colossal coral boulders and also live corals. The tiny union territory of Lakshadweep is the only coral islands of our country, it is formed from the gradual integration of calcium from the sea water by live corals and they are then gradually transformed into reefs. Varanasi often called Banaras is one of the oldest living cities in the world. It is the definitive place of pilgrimage interest of the Hindus for ages. Home of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the genesis of Varanasi are yet unknown to us. The city probably gets its name from the two rivers that border the city, the Varana to the north and the Asi to the south. Rishikesh, a place of religious and mythological importance for Hindus, is situated on the banks of the holy Ganges at the foot hills of the Himalayas in district of Dehradun. It is also known as the gateway to Garhwal region of the Himalayas and the Himalayan Shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. This is the Tehri-Garhwal region of Uttaranchal.
