Gothic Splendor of Golconda Fort

Gothic Splendor of Golconda Fort golconda fort

Just 10kms away from the bustle of Hyderabad, Golconda Fort exists that literally stood the test of time. In fact, it’s not just time that tested the strong walls and structures of this fort. Generations of vandals and plunderers couldn’t bring down the Golconda Fort down on its knees. It’s battered, but keeps its head firmly upright in pride. The history books will tell you that Golconda means “shepherd’s hill”.

What the history books won’t tell you is the feeling you will experience when you visit the Golconda Fort. It’s like taking a trip back in time. The 800 years old fort was built across three dynasties that ruled the land then: the Kakatiyas, the Bahamanis and finally the Qutub Shahis, who finished off the construction with the 10-mile long boundary wall, enveloping the fort in a security blanket that has no chinks.

The Golconda Fort reflects the combined influence of Hindu and Muslim dynasties in its structures and carvings. The architectural motifs have both the cultural elements. The ruling dynasties used this fort as their capital, before the Qutub Shahis shifted to the old city of Hyderabad. The Golconda Fort is well guarded by moats and high walls that are 50 to 60 feet high and 17 to 34 feet wide.

The Golconda Fort is credit to be the mother of the famous Kohinoor Diamond. There are historical annals to prove that the fort was the site of a very thriving diamond market in those days. It also proves that the fortification was not just to inspire awe and fear among the enemies; it was a necessity.

Highly recommended: Make sure you watch the ‘Sound & Light’ show at the Golconda fort! It is conducted in the evenings in several languages. It’s a visual treat to watch the show narrate the much-ragged but spellbinding tale of the Golconda Fort.
