The Magnificent Birla Temple of Hyderabad

The Magnificent Birla Temple of Hyderabad Birla Mandir Hyderabad

One of the well-known dynasties of modern India, the Birlas, have built several temples across the country. These temples are dedicated to the Lord Laxminarayan or Lord Venkasteshwara. It’s very curious to note that these temples are never known by the residing deities! They are always known as Birla Temples. The one at Hyderabad was built some 50 years ago, atop the Kala Pahad.

The Birla Temple at Hyderabad is built with white marble, imported from the state of Rajasthan. The idol at this temple is that of Lord Venkateshwara, and is the replica of the more famous Balaji Temple in Tirupati. The temple sits on the Kala Pahad, which is one of the twin Naubat Pahad hillocks. The temple is surrounded by landmarks on all sides. You have the Reserve Bank of India building, the Gothic structure of the Secretariat Building, the beautiful Lumbini Park and the expansive Hussain Sagar flanking the temple.

The entrance to the Birla Temple is from the Reserve Bank of India side. You have to walk a short distance before you reach the staircase. The flight of steps meanders through intricately designed banisters. Hindu carvings and motifs dot the way up, with several structures representing the fusion of Rajasthani and Deccan architectures. Baroque canopies welcome you to the staircase. After you move up, you can enter the main temple. There is a four-tiered ‘rajagopuram’ that is evidence of the South Indian way of constructing temples.

The Birla Temple presents a wonderful view of the city around it and which it is a part of. It’s like being on a time machine that takes you back in time while you gaze at urban scenes like the crowds at the administrative annexes of the government, the bustle of traffic on Tank Bund and also the cultural ambiance of the Ravindra Bharathi, not to mention the NTR Memorial.
