Warangal is a preferred tourist destination for many who visit Andhra Pradesh. Situated at a distance of about 130kms from the capital city of Hyderabad, Warangal has some exquisite tourist spots that are unique in their own rights. You can reach Warangal from Hyderabad on the National Highway 202. Trains are also preferred by many who come from various parts of the country.
The prime tourist location in Warangal is the Warangal Fort. This fort was built by King Ganapati Deva of the Kakatiya dynasty in the 13th Century. The annex of the fort covers a radius of 19kms. It has about 45 pillars and towers strewn across the lavish compound. A temple of the Mother Earth, or the “Swayambhudevi Alayam”, is the cynosure of this location, along with the intricately carved gateway of the fort, famously known as the “Ekasshila”.
Tourists also flock at Warangal to see the Thousand Pillar Temple. The temple was constructed by King Rudra Deva in 1663. The temple is testimony to the architectural grandeur of the Chalukya dynasty. The temple has place for three deities: Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Surya (Sun God). The temple is so named because of the presence of one thousand pillars, all carved with the same distinct refinery. A monolithic carving of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull, holds pride of place in the Thousand Pillar Temple. There are several smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. These are dotted around the Hanumakonda Hill, which also houses the Thousand Pillar Temple.
The man-made Pakhal Lake is another gem in Warangal. It was carved out by the Kakatiya dynasty in 1213. The Lake is set in the lap of a picturesque location of hills and greenery. Spread over an area of 30sq km, the Lake offers a home to thousands of migratory birds. You can also check out the Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary on the shores of the Lake. You can find animals and birds of many rare species here.
