India >> Arunachal Pradesh >> Tipi >> Tipi Orchidarium
It’s easier to visit the orchidarium at Tipi from the Guwahati side than from the Arunachal Pradesh side. It’s about 180kms from the city of Guwahati. The orchidarium at Tipi is the third largest in the whole of the continent of Asia. The entrance to the orchidarium tags the place as a ‘temple of orchids’.
As tourists are aware, orchids are among the most prized flowers. They have exquisitely beautiful colours and a fragrance that is second to none. The orchids at this Tipi orchidarium attract orchid lovers across the globe. The founders of this haven of orchids have to be careful on a daily basis to protect these delicate creations of nature against the harsh pollution that corrodes the flora outside the protective boundaries of the orchidarium.
The Tipi orchidarium was set up in 1972. It covers an area of over 112.8 acres. There are some 50,000 odd orchids being nurtured at present. Out of this, some 300 have been labeled as ‘exotic’. There are some 425 species of orchids in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Out of them, 20 species have been marked and identified as ‘endangered’. Among these, there is one famous species that was lost in the 1850s before it was discovered again after 50 years. The popular name of this species is aptly called: Lost Indian Lady’s Slipper!
There are other famous species like the Rhynchostylis, used in the bridal dresses of Assamese women and the grand Vanda species that is particularly popular in the North East. These belong to those species that have been declared to be fit for commercial utilization. The aim of the orchidarium at Tipi is clear: it wants to preserve and research and maintain orchids in their natural habitat. The orchidarium has centers in Itanagar, Dirang and Tezu. Other than orchids, you can also find a variety of flowers and shrubs in the Tipi orchidarium. Take a romantic stroll through these flower gardens, far away from the concrete jungle.
