If you are visiting Arunachal Pradesh, you have to go to Tawang. There are some amazing places to see in this part of the state. You can start your trip to Tawang with the Jung Falls. It is about 35kms from the center of Tawang. The Falls became famous after the shooting of the film ‘Koyla’ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Other than the Jung Falls, you can check out other local places of interest in Tawang. The Tawang Monastery should be high on your list of priorities. The monastery is the second largest in the world and also the third oldest. The largest one is, of course, in Lhasa and continues to face neglect in the Chinese regime.
Another delight of Tawang is the Madhuri Lake. The lake was renamed after the Bollywood diva, Madhuri Dixit, shot some scenes of ‘Koyla’ here. The lake was formed in the 1970s after a slice of the mountain came down and formed a sort of dam. The meeting point of four streams created this lake. You can see the Chinese hills from the lake and the Chinese border is really close. The place is a highly sensitive area and is well-guarded by the military. They have check posts at regular intervals. Tourists must always carry their IDs because the sentinels ask for them very frequently. Also, photography is prohibited in this area. If you get caught, the army will ask to see all that you have shot or they will threaten to break your equipment!
You can, of course, shoot the picturesque Nagula Lake. This lake is almost at half point on the way to the Madhuri Lake. Tourists must be careful against transport people conning them by claiming the Nagula Lake to be the Madhuri Lake! To ensure that you have actually reached the Madhuri Lake, check for the signboard that says ‘Shungester’ (its earlier name). Also, look for tell-tale signs of tree stumps jutting out of the center of the lake.
