The town of Ziro is divided into two parts – Old Ziro and New Ziro. Located at a high altitude of about 5700 feet from the sea level, the town of Ziro is ensconced in pine-studded hills. There are several rivers flowing through the town – Nishi, Miri, Subansiri, Dafla and Apatani. In fact, Apatani is the name of the tribal sect that comprises the natives of Ziro. The main tourist attractions in Ziro are the Tarin Fish Farm, the craft center and numerous bamboo and pine groves on the hillsides.
The town of Ziro is famous for the culture of fish and paddy. Started primarily by the tribal inhabitants of the area, the government has injected some modern mechanisms to make the process more scientific and productive. But the major part of Ziro is not touched by any trappings of modernity. That is why Ziro is a natural choice for tourists who like hiking and trekking. The town of Ziro presents convenient accommodation for the tourists in the Circuit House or at the Inspection Bungalow. You have to obtain permission from the Deputy Commissioner of Ziro to stay in these places.
If you are planning a little sightseeing, you can try both the parts of Ziro. There is a distance of about 5kms from the old part of the town and the new. After you cross Old Ziro, you have to descend about 200m to reach New Ziro. The Government endorsed Handicraft Center is located here. You can buy cane and bamboo hats from this center, along with other handcrafted artifacts. You can then take a jeep to the Tale Sanctuary. You cannot use the jeep beyond Ponge. Then on you have to trek for about 8kms to reach the sanctuary. The sanctuary covers an area of 337sq.kms. Expect to find clouded leopards, bears and various rare orchids in the sanctuary.
