The town of Pahalgam is also known as the shepherd’s village. It gets its name from the fact that this was indeed a valley of shepherds before the tourism industry caught up with it. Simple folks inhabited the place and you can feel the warmth of the people when you go there. Perched on a lofty height of 2130m, Pahalgam is now a tourist’s paradise. The town grew up at the meeting point of the streams coming in from the Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder river. The weather of Pahalgam is cool throughout the year. The temperature in summer does not exceed 25C.

The exceptional beauty of Pahalgam is enhanced by the cover of pine trees. Visit Baisaran and you will find a sight of rare beauty. Hajan is an idyllic picnic spot on the way of Chandanwari. This place has been captured in many Bollywood films. The city of Pahalgam is composed of 8 small villages. Among them, the more famous is Mamal. It has a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple goes back to the 5th century. It happens to be the oldest temple in the state of Kashmir.

Thousands of tourists visit Pahalgam during the annual Amarnath Yatra. The route starts from Pahalgam to Chandanwari can be covered in a car. Here on, you have to climb the mountains on a pony or by foot. The Sheshnag Lake is located at a height of 3574m, at a distance of 11kms from Chandanwari. The last stop on this route is Panchtarni. The cave of Amarnath is a further 6kms away. A stalagmite of ice inside the cave forms the object of devotion. The moon has considerable influence on this stalagmite. Pahalgam is also the base for many trekking routes that take you to the glacier at Kolohi and Aru.  Pahalgam also has a golf course that tourists make use of.
