A trip to any part of Orissa is incomplete without a trip to Chilka Lake. It’s one of the largest and most famous lakes in India, second only to the Dal Lake (Kashmir) in popularity. If you visit Puri during the Rath Yatra festivities, take off the weekend and head over to the Chilka Lake.
The stretch from Puri to Chilka is just 45 kms and there’s the green, exotic natural cover to keep you company. On a pleasant day, this journey itself is an experience! There are plenty of transport options available in the form of buses, taxis and private vehicles.
The Chilka Lake stretches across a length of 75 kms and a width of 15 kms. The area covered by the Lake is 1100 sq. kms. The stretch shrinks to 906 sq. kms during the summer. The lake is dotted with several beautiful islands. Some of them are Phulbari, Nuapara, Berahpura and Parikud. Among them, the Nalban Island is the biggest and most beautiful in terms of scenic beauty. The Chilka Lake is fed by one of the largest rivers of South India, the Mahanadi.
The central attraction of the Chilka Lake is in winter. That’s when numerous species of birds migrate to this place. Some of them fly in from as far as Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq and Siberia. Some also come in from the Himalayas. The period of their visit is between October and March. The most popular among them is the Flamingo. The bird sanctuary in Chilka has 150 species of birds.
The Chilka Lake has a wide variety of fish as well. There are as many as 225 different varieties. You can find Irrawaddy dolphins serenading in the water! That is a major tourist draw at Chilka. There’s hardly any better place to be in for a nature lover.
