We continue our trip of Orissa this week with Nandan Kanan National Park. Over the years, this national park and sanctuary has become the numero uno tourist destination for those interested in zoological parks. It is located at a fashionable distance of just 20 kms from the capital of Orissa, Bhubaneshwar. The meaning of the word ‘nandan kanan’ means ‘garden of pleasure’. The park came into being in 1960.
The Nandan Kanan National Park is part of the Chandaka forest. It is because of this reason that the animals and plants in the park are able to live in their natural habitats. The national park was the site for the first ever ‘gharial’ breeding ground in India. In the year 1980, this park was put on the global zoological map for the birth of 3 white tigers from naturally-colored parents. Since then, the white tigers at Nandan Kanan National Park have attracted tourists all over the world. The parents of the white cubs, Deepak and Ganga, still remain etched in the minds of the animal lovers who love to visit Nandan Kanan often.
Nandan Kanan National Park is known for the extra-curricular facilities as well. Nandan Kanan is not just for the animal lovers. It is as much for the nature lovers. The picturesque surroundings of the national park evoke the desire to visit this peace haven repeatedly. The safari drives through territories dotted with white tigers and lions make for an interesting ride.
You can have day-long picnics in the lap of nature, followed by a visit to the nocturnal animal house and the reptile park. You can just stroll around on pathways made by the lords of the jungles. Add to it the scenic beauty offered by the aerial ropeways rides in cable cars and you know you are in for a treat, far from the concrete jungle of the cities.
