India >> Sikkim >> East Sikkim
In a continuation to our earlier post on East Sikkim, we now move on to the other parts of this region. As we told you in the previous post that East Sikkim is a very influential part of the state both in terms of administration and tourism, we have several other tourist destinations. Some of them are popular with the tourists, while the others are new additions to the itinerary.
Let’s start off with the Do-Drul Chorten Stupa. This was built by the head of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhists, Truslshi Rimpoche. Since 1945, when it was built, this Stupa happens to be one of the most important ones in Sikkim. There are 108 Mani-lhakor or prayer wheels. To call upon the Bodhisattva, they turn these wheels while chanting prayers.
The Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology is another place that attracts tourists. This Buddhist Institute is the most prestigious one in the country. It contains a unique collection of manuscripts belonging to the Tibetans, the Lepchas and many of them are in Sanskrit. Some 200 Buddhist icons form part of the collection. It is renowned the world over for being a center of Buddhist learning.
Some of the minor tourist spots include the Tashi View Point. It is some 8kms away from Gangtok. Mt. Siniolchu and Mt. Khangchendzonga are clearly visible from this spot. You have to admit that these two peaks are definitely among the grandest summits of the world. Another spot of tourist interest would be Ganesh Tok. About 7kms away from the capital city, you can see the same summits but from a different angle. A cafeteria equips you with hot coffee, the perfect ingredient to gaze upon these works of nature! While in East Sikkim, also make sure that you visit the Fambong Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary.
