Kaziranga national park is one of the famous Wildlife Sanctuaries in Assam and it is a beautiful tourist spot and a World Heritage Site of UNESCO. If you are planning for a wildlife tour , Kaziranga national park is the one you should count. Kaziranga national park is situated in central Assam area on the bank of river Brahmaputra and it is approximately 200 km east from Guwahati. The Kaziranga National Park area is of 429.93 Sq.Km. with an additional area of 429.40 Sq.Km. and situated in the two districts of Assam, Golaghat and Nagaon. The total area of the park within Nagaon district is 175 Sq.Km., out of which 135 Sq.Km. is under Bagori Forest Range office and 40 Sq.Km. falls within Ghorakati Forest Range office.

Kaziranga national park is famous for Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros. Beside this, Kaziranga has a rich and diverse population of almost 42 species of fish, 9 species of amphibians, 27 species of reptiles, more than 491 species of birds and 35 species of mammals. Among the larger mammals, there are almost 86 tigers (2000 census), 1048 elephants (2002 census), 1552 rhinos (1999 census), 1431 buffalo (2001 census) and 486 swamp deer. Kaziranga also houses more than 546 species of flora. Kaziranga is said to have about 86 tigers, which is the highest density of tigers in the world (1 every 5 km, 2000 census). Watch wildlife either from elephant back or from jeep. All the plain lands are infested by tall elephant grass, so it is better to watch wildlife from elephant back. Rhinos, wild buffalo, hog deer etc can be easily seen from elephant back. Most of the animals are habituated with human presence and don’t feel shy. Jeep ride costs approx rs 850 each and elephant ride is rs 180 each. The charge of carrying camera is rs 50 each.

The climate here is tropical. In summer it is very hot and humid.In winter, warm days and chilled nights. Best time to travel is September to March. The best place of lodging in Kaziranga is the Wild Grass Resort or Diphlu River Lodge.
